When you open the retail packaging for the first time, it’s clear the Z490 Ace is much improved over the Z390 version. Gone is the multi-tiered chipset heatsink, replaced by a much better-looking implementation that covers more of the PCB.
First up is connectivity, which we covered on the intro after the spec listing. However, one thing not mentioned previously is the triple M.2 slots on the front of the board to ensure maximum storage expandability.
The easy mode menu also lacks a boot override option, which is an option I usually like to see here as it’s so useful when setting up an OS.
The MEG Z490 Ace is painted black and orange, with stripes of gray poking through from the metal heatsink and shroud surfaces. This color scheme makes for a pleasant change of pace.
MSI says using phase controller/mirroring instead of doublers helps to deliver identical power to the phases they are attached to with no propagation delay and lower dynamic ripple. So far, this is the most robust VRM we’ve seen — plenty to handle the power-hungry Intel Core i9-10900K at ambient and even sub-ambient overclocking adventures.

The gold accents on the Ace are more subtle than some of the ones we've seen on MSI motherboards before and we think it's all the better for it. It's there if you like a little glitz, but not dominating things if you're not very keen on it.
USB 3.2 2x2: The ACE is one of only four boards we have tested that comes with the newest USB interface. While Thunderbolt 3 is faster, it is also less widely utilized, and devices can be much more expensive. Therefore, we are happy to see this equipped on the MSI MEG check here Z490 ACE.

Idle power with the full system and TITAN RTX discrete GPU in place, we see the 10900K pulling 67W, which is the 4th place as far as lowest; this falls in line with most of the boards.
